This tour includes an overview of the history of the Box Hill Cemetery and a number of the interesting structures within it. The starting point is the site of the first burial, that of a 3-week old baby girl. Then, as this tour commemorates Victoria Day, it will concentrate on acknowledging the roles of pioneers of the Surrey Hills, Box Hill, Doncaster and Mitcham areas. Victoria Day used to be a public holiday in Victoria prior to WW1. It acknowledges the date on which Victoria separated from NSW.

The tour will be led by Sue Barnett and John Barnao (of Box Hill Historical Society).

Participants are advised to wear flat walking shoes, as some of the paths in the cemetery are uneven, to carry water for personal consumption.

LOCATION: Box Hill Cemetery, 395 Middleborough Road, Box Hill.   The meeting point is outside the cemetery office. Please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the commencement of the tour, which will leave promptly at 2pm.

NON-MEMBERS of either SHNC or the Historical Society:  Victoria Day: Early settlers of the area cemetery tour  $20

SHNC MEMBERS and Historical Society members:  Victoria Day: Early settlers of the area cemetery tour  $15

Note:  The Cemetery Tour advertised in our What’s On Guide for Friday 1 July has sold out.  This tour is a repeat of that same tour due to popular demand.
