Strength training is particularly necessary when ageing as it helps with muscular mass reduction that decreases significantly after 50. Health experts advise that strengthening core muscles will improve balance that assists with reducing the risk of falls. Our strength training classes are aimed at strengthening core muscles using weights and with our expertly trained YMCA instructors, you will feel safe and carefully guided through every exercise. According to the experts, it’s never too late, even if you’ve never picked up a weight in your life!

Strength training for over 65s helps to improve:

  • Balance that helps with everyday activities (e.g., climbing stairs, carrying groceries)
  • Bone density
  • Blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels
  • Cognitive function
  • Depressive symptoms

These classes are facilitated by YMCA instructors and focus on exercising core muscles using weights.

If you are new to our Strength program, you must not enrol via the website until you have completed the YMCA Medical Clearance form with your Doctor. Please contact the Centre to receive the relevant forms and information before registering and to check class availability.

In order to qualify for the government subsidised rate you must meet all of the following eligibility criteria:

  • Over the age of 65 years
  • Boroondara resident
  • Registered with My Aged Care (or agree to be registered)
  • Agree to be registered with Boroondara Council

All other participants are required to pay the full fee. Please note, the full fee is still significantly cheaper than our other health and wellbeing classes.
